PROJECT REFERENCE NUMBER : IE/30/2007/BIOSYNERGY1
Research Project Title:
Market-competitive and environmental friendly synthesis of bio-products with the production of secondary energy carriers through the bio-refinery approach.
In line with the overall JRC mission, the Institute for Energy provides scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of community policies related to energy. Special emphasis is given to the security of energy supply and to sustainable & safe energy production. The Clean Energies Unit of the Institute for Energy, comprising about 55 people, runs, among others, activities on production of energy and of alternative fuels from coal and biomass.
The proposed work is part of an FP6 European Integrated Project BioSynergy: BIOmass for the market competitive and environmental friendly SYNthesis of bio-products chemicals and/or materials together with the production of secondary enERGY carriers transportation fuels, power and/or CHP through the biorefinery approach, combining both biochemical en thermo-chemical pathways, and process development from lab-scale to demonstration at pilot-scale.
Within this Integrated Project, JRC contributes to market assessment of promising bio-refinery chains (particularly market perspectives of bio-refinery derived products), and more importantly to integral biomass-to-products chain design, analysis and optimisation via energy, environmental and economic assessment of alternative bio-refinery chains and selection of the optimum pathways that earn the greatest energy saving and environmental benefits at lowest costs. In addition, JRC has leadership of dissemination and training.
To support and complement JRC staff within this Integrated Project, we are looking for a highly-motivated person to work on various techno-economic aspects of the bio-refinery concept, in particular Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA) of various alternative bio-refinery pathways.
The candidate must have a university degree (preferably PhD) and at least one year experience in a relevant area such as engineering, economics, chemistry. (S)he should be able to demonstrate experience in Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and modelling tools. Experience in techno-economic studies and assessments, as well as in bio-energy-related subjects and activities constitutes a valuable asset. A good knowledge of spoken and written English is required. The candidate should have good communication skills as the work will involve constant interaction with a wider European consortium. DG JRC applies an equal opportunities policy - in case of equal merit, preference will be given to the gender in minority.
