Penny, I would suggest Owen Barfield's "Saving the Appearances" to you
-- I haven't looked at "Matter and Memory" but I think Barfield's book
(which is brief) talks about the same "problem" but from a different
angle, and also talks about the evolution of thought and the
relationship between the observer and the phenomena that led to where we
are today (with most people thinking the Universe is a giant machine).
