Following on from Danny's post -
Art and design, despite all of their differences, are struggling to assert
the value of making.
For most practitioners - there is little to no making anymore in 3D
professional practice.....
The idea is sketched, modeled quickly on a laptop, arrives via stereo
lithograph or 3D print via courier, gets put into a serious CAD package -
Catia, Pro/E or UG and following the bidding/ purchase/ from a low cost
source - arrives in the mail sometime later.
There is often very little 'making'. To counter this trend, some
practitioners - have started using virtual 'making' tools - see
www.sensable.com.
So - in the future 'making' - might be removed from the reseach discussion
pertaining to ART & design?
best,
GJ
