Sorry Leona,
I had to reply as I had this vision of you stood by the bedside waiting to
do your risk assessment. I think it must be sleep deprivation on my part.
Thanks
Frank

Dear june , I work in for a mental health trust with medium secure units, we
remove staff from the clinical area, usually, as the risk often cannot be
controlled. Some staff remain in clinical areas where there is "no risk of
violence" from the risk assessment. In addition we restrict medical staff
from on call duties and all pregnant staff from emergency duty rota, control
and restraint, etc, as the risk of violence cannot be controlled. I have
attached our generic risk assessment which is a toll to assist managers when
conducting the risk assessment, we in OH then see all staff with the RA asap
after becoming pregnant. Please give me a call if required.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Staff working on mental health units
Dear members
The NHS organisation that I work for covers staff working on acute mental
health units, which include "crisis intervention teams" who have clients who
can not be cared for in the community and are invariably admitted under
section.
The client group on these units are becoming increasingly challenging and
frequently display violent and aggressive behaviour. The staff are all
trained in control and restraint techniques and are often required to use
this method of restraint.
We are concerned about our pregnant staff working on these units
particularly on nights when there are 3 staff and only one of these trained.
Under the organisations New and Expectant Mothers at work Policy, managers
are required to do regular pregnancy risk assessments and OH advisors or
physicians follow these assessments up when a risk/or health problem is
highlighted.
We are now looking at the procedure again for these units, although we do
individual risk assessments and recommend accordingly we are now considering
whether there should be overall guidance recommending that pregnant workers
do not work in these areas.
I would appreciate any guidelines/policies/ protocols that any of you may
have in place in addition to any advice.
Also is anyone aware of any case law involving pregnant staff working on
mental health units.
In anticipation of your advice.
