Two postdoctoral positions are available in Jeremy Hutson's research
group at the University of Durham. The people appointed will work on
different aspects of the theory of cold and ultracold molecules:
Position 1: Interactions and collisions between coolable molecules such
as NH, NH3 and LiH and laser-cooled atomic species such as Li and Rb.
Position 2: Collisions involving heteronuclear (polar) alkali metal dimers
Both positions are funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences
Research Council in connection with collaborative research projects that
are part of the EuroQUAM (European Quantum Matter) programme established
by the European Science Foundation. Both projects will involve close
collaboration with experimental and theoretical groups across Europe
working on related problems, and the post-docs appointed will be
expected to take a proactive role in developing the collaborations.
Experience in atomic or molecular quantum mechanics (bound states,
scattering, and/or electronic structure theory) is essential.
The University of Durham is a centre of both experimental and
theoretical research on cold and ultracold atoms and molecules, with
active groups in both the Physics and Chemistry Departments. These posts
will be associated with the recently funded IQ3 institute (Institute for
Quantum Control, Quantum Computing and Quantum Optics): see
http://massey.dur.ac.uk/iqm . Faculty members with interests in
the area of cold atoms and molecules include Charles Adams, Ifan Hughes,
Simon Cornish, Simon Gardiner, Jeremy Hutson and Eckart Wrede.
Durham is a small historic city in the north-east of England, based
around Palace Green, a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes Durham's
Norman Cathedral and Castle.
Further details of the post are available at the University's vacancies
Web site at https://jobs.dur.ac.uk/default.asp . Look for vacancy
numbers 1933 and 1934.
The two positions have different starting dates (the first from 1 July
or later, the other from 1 September or soon afterwards). However, it is
not necessary to fill in both sets of application forms: I will assume
that applicants are interested in both positions unless they clearly
state otherwise.
The closing date for applications is 30 May 2007.
