Re: Ground penetrating radar to find mine shafts:- I have known a number of student projects which examined various geophysical techniques to find old shafts, the thing I most remember about them is that they were remarkably unsuccessful. This may have been because the kit they were using was not the most up-to-date, but it should in theory have worked. Is modern equipment a lot more effective?

Subject: Dowsing shaft sites
We are working on the Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project in West
Devon, part of which involves opening footpaths to provide public
access to the mine sites from Devon Great Consuls, along the Tamar
Valley to Gawton mine. There are a number of shafts, which are
indicated on the Bedford estate map of 1867, that we can find no
evidence of on site. As a couple of these may be very close or even
on the line of the proposed footpaths, we are keen to locate them
accurately.
Does anyone on the list know of a dowser, based in Devon or Cornwall,
who might be able to locate the position of shafts on site?
many thanks
