JUNE 2007
We have a new course taking place in June:
-	Web 2.0: An Overview – 13th June

Further details of this appear below.

These are the training courses taking place in June at Aslib’s Offices in
London:

RECORDS MANAGEMENT: AN INTRODUCTION, 4th June
This one day course is a basic introduction to the principles and practices
of records management. It is designed for librarians and information
managers who have become involved in document and records management for the
first time and wish to gain a grounding in the relevant concepts and
techniques, building on and adapting their existing skills as information
professionals. Course Director: Shelley Hardcastle
Fee: £230 plus VAT (£270.25) Aslib corporate members / £287.50 plus VAT
(£337.81) Non members
Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/4/19.html

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT, 5th June
This seminar will give you an understanding of what knowledge management is,
how it has emerged from several key strands of management thinking and a
useful review of many of the initiatives that can and are being implemented.
Perhaps most importantly it will encourage you to respond positively to the
opportunity and the challenge represented by this subject. If the leading
writers are correct about its significance for this century, can you afford
not to?
Seminar Director: Nick Willard
Fee: £260 plus VAT (£305.50) Aslib corporate members / £325 plus VAT
(£381.88) Non members
Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/3/01.html

RECORDS SURVEY- A HALF DAY COURSE – 7th June (pm)
This half day course links with the one day course "Introduction to Records
Management". It is designed to give delegates an understanding of a key
records management tool - the records survey. Records surveys enable
information specialists to inventory records so that they can identify
issues within their organisation and gather data to plan for resolution. The
course is particularly relevant if you are planning to meet Freedom of
Information requirements.
Course Director: Shelley Hardcastle
Fee: £150 plus VAT (£176.25) Aslib corporate members / £187.50 plus VAT
(£220.31) Non members

WEB 2.0: AN OVERVIEW, 13th June NEW COURSE
Web 2.0 and social networking have become part of our personal and
professional culture, seemingly overnight. This one day event will examine
the story behind Web 2.0 applications, will look at what they do, and will
consider some of the ramifications for those working in information
management. The course is designed for those with an interest in
understanding and using content management applications such as RSS,
YouTube, Wikis, Flickr, Blogs and Podcasts. No prior experience is needed,
but familiarity with using the web would be useful. All terms will be
explained, and the course content will be delivered by presentations,
demonstrations, discussion and hands-on time. A list of web-based follow-up
resources will be provided. Course Director: Dr Lyn Robinson
Fee: £260 plus VAT (£305.50) Aslib corporate members / £325 plus VAT
(£381.88) Non members
Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/5/03.html
ABSTRACTING AND SUMMARISING QUICKLY AND ACCURATELY, 14th June
A practical introduction to the key techniques used in abstracting and
summarising documents of all kinds - news items, articles, books, reports
and unpublished internal documents.
Course Director: Tim Buckley Owen
Fee: £260 plus VAT (£305.50) Aslib corporate members / £325 plus VAT
(£381.88) Non members

USING EXCEL SPREADSHEETS TO MANAGE A LIBRARY BUDGET - A HALF DAY COURSE,
15th June (am)
What this course intends is to demonstrate how you can use Excel
spreadsheets to manage your library budgets. To compare what you estimated
you would spend which what you actually spent. To enable you to know at a
moment's notice where you are at any point in time with your actual and
newly predicted spend and not have to spend ages doing a manual reforecast.
Common and more complex Excel formulas will be explored to make your
professional life easier and to automate as much as possible. It is not
intended to be a book-keeping course, but is aimed at the average library
manager who is too busy to spend ages on budget management but for whom it
is important they can lay their hands on vital, upto-date information
without having to have a major trawl through past invoices and catalogue
records to try and work out where they are in the spending stakes. Course
Director: Fiona Durrant
Fee: £150 plus VAT (£176.25) Aslib corporate members / £187.50 plus VAT
(£220.31) Non members
Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/2/16.html

NEGOTIATING ONLINE SUBSCRIPTIONS – A HALF DAY WORKSHOP, 15th June (pm)
It is tough out there at the moment. We all need to make an impression on
our employers and one way we can achieve this is to save money. It is often
awkward talking about money and this session gives practical guidance on how
to broach the subject with the publisher. This session is aimed at anyone
who has to deal with online resource renewals, new subscriptions or
cancellations. The workshop provides practical tips and strategies you can
really use. Delegates will be able to learn from the experience of the
presenter as well as have the opportunity to discuss their own experiences.
Course Director: Fiona Durrant
Fee: £150 plus VAT (£176.25) Aslib corporate members / £187.50 plus VAT
(£220.31) Non members
Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/2/08.html

KNOWLEDGE MAPPING…THE NEXT STEP, 20th June
Knowledge Mapping is emerging as one of the key elements of many Knowledge
Management initiatives. Library and information professionals have an
important part to play - and in some instances will be expected to take the
lead role. This one-day seminar will clarify this complex subject and
provide clear guidelines on how to proceed.
Seminar Directors: Graham Robertson and Bob Bater
Fee: £280 plus VAT (£329) Aslib corporate members / £350 plus VAT (£411.25)
Non members

INDEXING: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE, 21st June
Indexing is one of the best known of 'traditional' library/information
activities. Its importance has not diminished in the digital age. On the
contrary, indexing is of even more importance in digital environments, so
that information can be efficiently found from sources such as the Internet,
or intranets. Indexing is an important part of the broader process of
metadata creation. Many library/information workers are expected to index
material, but not everyone is given sufficient training. This course covers
general principles of indexing, and the indexing process, and also specific
points of practice, in the indexing of all kinds of material, emphasising
the value of controlled indexing languages. The relations between indexing
and other ways of analysing and denoting content (abstracting, summarising,
classifying, categorising etc.) are emphasised. The course also deals with
understanding, and creating, indexing policies, which govern the way in
which indexing is carried out.
Course Director: Dr David Bawden
Fee: £260 plus VAT (£305.50) Aslib corporate members / £325 plus VAT
(£381.88) Non members
Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/4/16.html

ELECTRONIC SERIALS MANAGEMENT, 26th June
This one-day course will give you an introduction to the theory and practice
of the management of electronic serials and offers the opportunity to gain
an understanding of the rapidly-changing serials environment as well as an
insight into the practical day-to-day management issues relating to it.
Course Director: Caroline Moss Gibbons
Fee: £260 plus VAT (£305.50) Aslib corporate members / £325 plus VAT
(£381.88) Non members
