Subject: NLH search engine - the future. IMPORTANT
Dear all,
Ian McKinnell, NLH Head of Development, gave a presentation on the
future of
the NLH search function at a recent meeting of the NLH Content &
Collections
Development Group.
His paper is attached.
This is important - because there is no plan to re-procure an externally
developed search engine (the present one is provided by OCLC Pica Ltd -
formerly Fretwell Downing). Instead, NLH will develop an in-house,
search
function.
My understanding of the implications of this are:
- that when it comes to the re-procurement of e-content (e.g.
databases,
e-journals) NLH is not going to be looking at their interfaces - only
the
conent - as everything will be searchabe via the new NLH search
interface.
- that e-resources will be grouped together into logical "hubs" such as
"mental health" or "patient information".
Clearly there are implications for all of us here particularly in terms
of
training end users.
If you have any comments, please send them to me - and I will keep all
of
you informed on developments.
David
