Study German from scratch at Reading
The Department of German Studies at Reading University is pleased to
announce new courses in German for complete beginners. These programmes are
being offered as part of a Collaborative Agreement with the Open University
and are available from October 2007. The Department will be providing a
course of intensive language study in the first year, which can be taken as
part of a Single Honours course or in one of the dozen Combined Honours
programmes involving German. In addition to the intensive language study in
year 1, students take a module on aspects of post-1945 culture designed for
beginners in German; for students on other programmes, however, the language
modules are available as free standing elements. In year 2, additional
language courses will be provided, otherwise the range of "cultural" options
available will be the same as for other students taking German. The third
year (of four) is spent in Germany or Austria, either at a university, as a
teaching assistant or on a work placement.
Students admitted to these programmes will normally have demonstrated their
suitability for an intensive language course by holding an A-level in
another European foreign language.
A leaflet providing more details will soon be available, but in the meantime
please contact us for further information on this new initiative at
