Stephen mentioned hip-hop before. What kind of hip-hop is there i n
Denmark?
while coming across as a middle-clas person speaking of hip-hop as observer
without (i liked it when i was a teenager) - i would say that hip-hop is
different to these Slams in that it very often is a highly abstract rhymthic
metrical effect which the beat forces onto the stream of lyrics which in
themselves seem quite consonant with the "earlier" oral poetry Jane
mentions, ie that of small scale - often nomadic - societies, with emphasis
on long boasting poems, short narratives often glorifying the narrator's own
part in a fight or adventure, insults and feuding songs, and so on. but i
think the striated metrical pattern of hip-hop have permeated all sorts of
poetry and prose, page and stage, as its fashion, graffiti, emblems and
dance have reached far beyond 'hip-hop' of the streets...

Of course, another template for oral poetry is the tradition of painting
Homer, a few rapt listeners gathered round as he spins them one of his great
songs....
