Here at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies we are trying to clarify
and improve our procedures (and knowledge!) with regard to records
containing personal information of less than 100 years old and which are
subject to the Data Protection Act. Can anybody offer advice about, or even
an adaptable example of, a form we could ask a bona fide researcher to fill
in so that we could allow them access to otherwise closed records with
their guarantee that the personal details therein would not be used or
would be anonymised? It would not be appropriate for family history
research of course as the personal details are exactly what's wanted. I
imagine school reunions would not be appropriate either, but how about
somebody doing a school history, which is not dependent on those children's
details but may be dependent on access to the school records?
I await with baited breath replies on-list (or off for anyone who prefers).
