The "mad cow" first appeared, I think, in 'Phrase Book', with more poems in
'My Life Asleep'; you can find these in 'Her Book', Selected Poems 1988 -
1998 (Faber 2000). I think that's all of them.
Shapcott says this alter ego began as a sort of playful elaboration on the
phrase "you mad cow", sometimes applied to women, and here linked to the
symptoms of the cattle disease. She was my tutor at Newcastle University
for an MA in Writing Poetry, 2000, and we found her brilliant at encouraging
us to let our minds off the hook.
Here's a link to one of the first mad cow poems.
