The iconostasis, originally, templum, divides the sacred area of the
altar from the rest of the church. It was a partial division
indicating a division between clergy & laity, but allowing a view of the
sanctuary area & of the synthronon in the apse. Nice image here at S.
Clemente, Rome. http://www.classicalmosaics.com/images/sanclem1.jpg
It starts becoming more prominent after iconoclasm when it grows pillars
and an architrave, & adds wings in front of the flanking chapels (for
the bread & wine, & for the vestments). // By the 12th c at Sinai it
gets icons across the architrave. This became usual by the 14thC,
finally a full wall as a place for the display of icons, probably
helping generate an increase in the number of icons produced. As the
screen increased, the liturgy behind the screen became more abstract &
ceremonial. Robin Cormack does this subject well in his /Byzantine Art/.
The roodscreen is farther west. I know less about the roodscreen, but
in mendicant churches it divided the ecclesia fratrum or ecclesia
superior from the ecclesia fidelium or ecclesia inferior. [Note:

A useful article here, if you can get JSTOR, by Marcia Hall on Sta.

The net is very slow & I have deadlines, but iff you google on Greece
iconostasis you will get a lot, mostly not Greek, but you see how the
iconostasis conveys different attitudes in the various types of Orthodox
& Coptic churches.
