Aslib has a couple of new courses taking place in May:
-	Copyright Policies, Dealing with Infringements and Risk Management, 1st
May
-	Running an Effective Information Service with Limited Resources, 2nd May

Further details of these appear below.

These are the training courses taking place in May at Aslib’s Offices in
London:

COPYRIGHT POLICIES, DEALING WITH INFRINGEMENTS AND RISK MANAGEMENT, 1st May
  NEW
Copyright and licensing are important strategic issues for information
professionals, the effective management of which can reduce the risks of
copyright infringements and create more efficient working practices. This
workshop will develop a toolkit for dealing with infringements of copyright,
managing risk and developing suitable policies and procedures. Participants
will consider staff and user expectations, planning requirements,
restrictions and how to create an environment where copyright is handled
appropriately. The afternoon will build upon the areas covered in the
morning by facilitating the development of an institutional copyright policy
covering both the internal management of rights as well as copyright and
licensing compliance for the use of third party materials held by the
institution. The session will be concluded with an examination of how
copyright policies can be successfully implemented and enforced.
Workshop Director: Naomi Korn

RUNNING AN EFFECTIVE INFORMATION SERVICE WITH LIMITED RESOURCES, 2nd May NEW
Aimed at people who may be new to information work, or who may have been
left to cope with running an information service on their own, this course
is designed to give you lots of ideas for hitting the ground running. It
will help you discover the information needs of the organisation you are
serving, identify the information resources that will help meet those needs,
and decide how to provide services that get your information unit noticed
and valued.
Course Director: Tim Buckley Owen
Fee: £230 plus VAT (£270.25) Aslib corporate members /£287.50 plus VAT
(£337.81) Non members

STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS, 3rd May
Statistical data is a vital aid to decision making in business. Statistics
are important to provide information on existing and potential markets,
measure industry performance and indicate social and economic trends. This
course is intended for those who want to gain a better understanding of
statistical data, key concepts and available sources. It will be of interest
to all information professionals whose work involves the use of statistics.
Course Director: Chris Murphy

(£381.88) Non members

METADATA: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE, 15th May
Metadata is one of the most important, but least understood, aspects of the
modern information environment. This course demystifies the concept of
metadata, and shows how and why it is used, in a variety of environments. A
variety of commonly-used metadata formats will be demonstrated for example
Dublin Core, and AACR/MARC - and the way in which metadata creation relates
to the 'traditional' library/information tasks of indexing and cataloguing
will be outlined. Library/information workers are often called to create
metadata records; they may also be asked to evaluate, choose or create
metadata formats for their organisation's information. This course deals
with both these topics, in principle and in practice.
Course Director: Dr David Bawden
Fee: £260 plus VAT (£305.50) Aslib corporate members / £325 plus VAT

ORGANISING DIGITAL INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE, 17th May
Organising information and knowledge for effective retrieval is of ever more
importance, with the increasing importance of digital information -
especially the Internet and intranets - and of knowledge management. This
course gives an overview of the most important tools for information
organisation, focusing on metadata formats, and on subject description
tools, especially taxonomies and thesauri. Examples are demonstrated from a
variety of digital environments, and participants have the chance to design,
in outline, a information organisation tool for their own situation.

KNOWLEDGE ARCHITECTURE: An Exploratory Workshop, 22nd May
Information Architecture (IA) has established itself in recent years as a
portfolio of practices combining aspects of web design, usability, metadata
management and information science with a view to creating information
systems which people find both useful and usable. Yet, IA conventionally
addresses only one component of organizational competence - explicit
knowledge (information). Although information must be managed effectively,
in the knowledge economy this is not sufficient on its own, leaving out of
account as it does, that other vital component of organizational competence
tacit knowledge. IA however, is evolving in some quarters into Knowledge
Architecture (KA), a compound discipline addressing all the sources of
organizational competence - explicit and tacit - within a single, holistic
framework. In order to add the missing tacit dimension, an additional set of
tools and techniques needs to be included in the Knowledge Architect's
toolkit. This interactive workshop blends presentation, discussion and
practical exercises to consider the evolutionary stages involved in the
transition from IA to KA and to examine the most important tools and
techniques involved. It presents a number of case studies and invites
delegates to discuss the implications for information professionals,
information managers, information architects, knowledge managers and
knowledge workers alike.

UNDERSTANDING AND ASSESSING INFORMATION NEEDS, 23rd May
Understanding the information needs of users - individuals and groups - is
an absolute necessity of an information worker, or information service, is
to be effective. This course gives both a thorough understanding of the
concepts, and practical skills for understanding and assessing information,
from the immediate needs of a single user needing information (the
'reference interview') to the all-encompassing information needs of a whole
organisation (part of an information management audit).

PROJECT MANAGEMENT, 24th May
Projects are a fact of life in library and information environments. Whether
they are big projects (such as implementing IT systems, setting up a
website, conducting a customer survey) or on a smaller scale, (such as
introducing a newsletter) all projects represent a steep learning curve for
busy managers. The ultimate success of any project depends on vision,
effective communication skills and good planning. By using tried and tested
methods and techniques a project can be successfully completed without
disrupting normal service routines.
