Center for History of Physics - Postdoctoral Associate Historian
The Center for History of Physics at the American Institute of Physics (AIP) in College Park, MD is seeking a postdoctoral Associate Historian for three years, to help fulfill the Center's mission to preserve and make known the history of modern physics and allied sciences through publication of books, articles and Web exhibits, through oral history interviewing, and through efforts to preserve professional papers of scientists and records of scientific institutions. The successful candidate will conduct projects using the history of physics and allied sciences for scholarship, education and public information, working with an interdisciplinary group of historians, archivists and librarians.
The historian will: Conduct independent research relating to the history of the modern physical sciences, resulting in the publication of scholarly articles and books, and present findings at professional conferences. Do research for and conduct oral history interviews with scientists, particularly in support of the Center's history mission and its current research programs; edit transcripts of interviews. Design and conduct education/public information projects. Prepare bibliography of articles and other resources for the Center's Newsletter and Website and do other supporting work as needed. Participate in fund-raising for projects.
Recent Ph.D. in the history of science (physical science) or equivalent is desired. Advanced research, writing and editing skills are essential; administrative ability is a plus. Familiarity with Web-related software would be helpful. The normal term for the position is three years. Competitive salary and benefits.
