National Inventory Research Project Seminar
“NIRP Research and its Future”
Birkbeck, University of London
2-5.30 pm, Friday 11 May 2007
Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Getty Grant Program
and the Kress Foundation, the National Inventory Research Project (NIRP)
has been working with 200 small and regional museums across the UK,
researching and cataloguing 7,000 pre-1900 Continental European oil
paintings for a searchable web database.
NIRP is a unique national initiative helping museums add value to their
collections by offering specialist expertise to create authoritative
records. The Project’s combined database of such records will publicise and
promote collections, and encourage further research and the use of
collections in exhibitions and publications.
The fourth and final NIRP research seminar will present five examples of
productive collaborations between project researchers and curators that
have resulted in some exciting discoveries and re-evaluations of
collections. There will also be opportunities to experience the content and
scope of the project’s database and to find out more about its formal
launch in November and its plans for the future.
The seminar, including tea/coffee and wine/soft drinks, is free.
