Thanks Mike.
I'm having difficulty with the idea that NO AV/firewall is needed. What if
you get sent an attachment via email and [horror of horrors] open it - there
may be no viruses now but surely it is only a matter of time?

You need to use Linux software rather than Windows software. So for
example OpenOffice.org instead of MS Office. But some Windows software
will run on Linux using a helper program called "Crossover".

AV not needed. Ubuntu doesn't come with a firewall as by default no
running services accept input from outside. You can add one if you
need to.

I find that Quicken 2001 runs fine using Crossover.

There's tons of help available on-line, e.g. www.ubuntuguide.org. The
latest version of Ubuntu is supposed to make it easy to add on the
extra bits you may want.
Just to make things clear, Linux isn't a program that you run under
Windows to make it more secure. It's an operating system that runs
*instead* of Windows.
