The "Coalition of Disabled People" would be delighted if you could publicise
our information in our attempt to generate support from Disabled People in
Birmingham to join us.
At this time of uncertainty for all Disabled People in the UK we express the
concerns of the "Lack of Interest" in Public Bodies announcing their
Disability Equality Duty committment.
Best wishes
Tom Comerford

Birmingham Coalition of Disabled People are campaigning for Disabled
People's rights.
Disabled People have not been allowed, and are still not allowed, to fit
into society. For example:
1. Housing - despite promises there is still a severe shortage of accessible
homes, and many of us are still forced to live in institutions. Why?
2. Built environment - too many public buildings, pubs, restaurants, shops
etc are still not accessible to many disabled people. Why?
3. Transport - disabled parking spaces are abused (or we are charged for
them) and public transport is still not fully accessible. Why?
4. Personal care - we have to struggle to get the assistance we need, and
Direct Payments support packages are being reduced. Why?
5. Information - too much "public" information is still not provided in
accessible formats. Why?
6. Social life - due to all the above, we are denied the opportunities to go
out where we like, meet each other and have an active social life like
anyone else. Why?
These are just a few examples of Independent Living which we are denied
because we are not seen as valued members of society. Instead of people with
equal rights, we are still seen as figures of pity or as objects of
ridicule.
The original Coalition of Disabled People had its funding withdrawn by
Birmingham City Council. Now we have formed a new coalition and are aiming
to get disabled people involved from across the West Midlands region.
We are an organisation of disabled people, with all types of impairments,
and believe that our lack of equality is caused not by impairment, but by
discrimination and failure to meet our needs by society (the Social Model of
Disability).
