The Institute for Social Change is an inter disciplinary research centre in the Faculty of humanities and the University of Manchester. PhD topics within the broad area of comparative social change can be developed by individual applicants. The Institute's staff are collaborating on research on Social Change with members of Harvard University, led by Prof. Robert Putnam.
While you study for the PhD, you will be trained in generic skills as well as quantitative research skills. You may also take course units in Sociology or Politics. Your PhD may take three years, or may take four years including a one-year MSc in Social Change. Each scholarship will cover fees and an annual stipend of up to £11,250.

What Data?
We would encourage you to consider using an international secondary data set such as the European Social Survey, World Values Survey, or Multi-National Time Use Data. Some empirical analyses in the Institute are expected to trace change over time and/or to compare at least two country experiences. All disciplinary backgrounds are welcome.
