(Bishopsgate Institute/London and Middlesex Archaeological Society Glass Slide Digitisation Project)
Bishopsgate Institute is an independent centre for adult education and cultural activities, only three minutes' walk away from Liverpool Street Station. Bishopsgate Library, part of the Institute, offers free public access to its unique special collections within the environment of its listed Victorian reading room and its archives include the papers of George Howell, Charles Bradlaugh, George Jacob Holyoake, historian Raphael Samuel and the records of the London Co-operative Society. Further information on the Institute and the Library can be found at: http://www.bishopsgate.org.uk.
Bishopsgate Institute is looking for a volunteer to take part in its project to digitise a glass slide collection of images, originally collected by the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society. The collection features images of most of London’s landmarks, churches, open spaces, statues and buildings, alongside social and cultural scenes and portraits of the famous from the turn of the century to the interwar period. The slides comprise a fascinating and unique resource for studying the changing nature of the City over a number of years and the project aims to open up this collection to use by researchers of all backgrounds. The images will be catalogued and placed onto the Library’s ADLIB catalogue and will be made available online via this catalogue in late 2007.
We require a enthusiastic, self-motivated and well-organised volunteer to undertake the project for one day per week. This opportunity would suit someone wishing to obtain experience in the archive/library environment prior to pursuing a career in this field. The placement will involve the use of the Library’s scanner and accompanying software. Basic PC skills are essential, and training in the specialist software will be given. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. In addition, the volunteer will be given a programme of talks and practical demonstrations covering the scope of the collections, services and activities. It is expected that the volunteer will commit at least three months to the project.
