We want to know what you think! Help with a nationwide survey of archivists.
What is the archive profession about in the 21st century? Do you think it’s
changed? And why? Does the Heritage Lottery Fund have an influence?
We are calling as many qualified archivists as possible, at all stages of their
careers, to contribute to research by UCL and NCA on archivists’ perceptions of
the profession. There is an opportunity to fill in an on-line questionnaire
and/or put your name forward to be involved in a more in depth discussion. The
questionnaire is short and easy to fill in – you can do it all from your
computer. We are looking for as many returns as possible, so if you have time
please do fill one in.
Please go to

for the questionnaire.

The Project Background
This British Academy funded research project, run jointly by UCL and the
National Council on Archives (NCA) will be looking at questions such as:
whether archivists have been influenced by the HLF’s ‘heritage’ framework?
Have aims such as access, learning and participation had an impact of
archivists’ views of their core activities and are they understood? Has HLF
influenced views on skills and career progression? And can any changes be
attributed to HLF or other factors?
With the data archivists provide the project will be able to contribute to a
better understanding of the training and workforce development issues of the
archive sector, advocate for the needs of archivists among external funders and
support the work of the Archive Lottery Advisory Service of the NCA.
The research project is supported by key members of the archives sector, as an
opportunity to learn more about this under-researched area and support the
development of the profession. Victor Gray of the Society of Archivists says:
'As President of the Society of Archivists I am delighted that UCL and the NCA
have received funding for this project. I am sure it will enable us all to
learn more about the influence of a key external funder on the profession. I
urge all members of the Society to take this opportunity to contribute to this
valuable research.'
