We are pleased to announce that the following dataset is now available:

CRDA/67 Local Heritage Initiative project directory database 2000-2006.

The Local Heritage Initiative (LHI) was a small grants programme
(3,000 to 25,000) launched in 2000 to help communities bring
their local heritage to life. Managed by the Countryside Agency with
funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and additional sponsorship
provided by the Nationwide Building Society, the LHI awarded over 23
million to some 1,400 projects across England. It provided advice and
support to the projects and collected the records and stories from
the projects in an archive based around the LHI website. The website
was an integral part of LHI and was a key tool, not only to promote
LHI to potential applicants but also to extend public access to the
wide range of project outputs.

The concept of LHI centred on the belief that local people are well
qualified to identify the heritage of their local area and determine
what is of value to them. Professionals can advise on what is of
historic and natural importance and assist in sourcing information
and providing technical advice, but local communities are in a good
position to make decisions about what is of local significance and
how it should be safeguarded for the future. LHI aimed to support
the widest possible range of projects and included projects under
the headings of Archaeological heritage, Built heritage, Customs and
Traditions, Industrial heritage and Natural heritage.

NDAD holds a dataset derived from the project directory section of the
website which contains information about each project. The amount of
content on each project varied considerably, as a minimum there was a
short description of the project, its location, contact information and
details of the grant awarded. Some projects had a larger web presence
having submitted additional text or multimedia content. NDAD holds
around 8000 images, 1000 documents, 200 video files and 100 audio
files from many of the LHI projects. These can be viewed online as
part of the LHI project directory data. The LHI programme officially
closed on 30th September 2006, as a result of the creation of the
Commission for Rural Communities and the formation of Natural England.

The dataset and documentation are open to the public without
restriction.
