Date: 2 April 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

REGISTER NOW FOR ALT-C 2007

Registration has opened for the 14th International Conference of the
Association for Learning Technology, the UK's largest academic conference
on learning technology, to be held in Nottingham between 4 and 6
September 2007. Three keynote speakers - Peter Norvig (Google), Michelle
Selinger (Cisco), and Dylan Wiliam (Institute of Education) - will
present different aspects of the conference theme: "Beyond control:
learning technology for the social network generation".

Dr Peter Norvig, Director of Research, has been with Google Inc since
2001. He is a Fellow of the American Association for Artificial
Intelligence and the Association for Computing Machinery and co-author of
Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, the leading textbook in the
field. He has over fifty publications in Computer Science, concentrating
on Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing and Software
Engineering. His keynote, 'Learning in an Open World', will address the
conundrum of what happens in a world where students have instant access
to trillions of words of information (and disinformation), without need
of a teacher as an intermediary.

Dr Michelle Selinger joined Cisco in 2001, where she is currently the
Global Education Strategist for Corporate Affairs as well as an adviser
for technology in education across the company. She has a strong
background in education and immediately prior to joining Cisco she was
the director of a research centre for new technology in education at the
University of Warwick. Michelle is Chair of the Academic Advisory Board
for the World Economic Forum's Global Education Initiative. In her
keynote she will argue that 'You can't cross a chasm in two small jumps'.
It is time to make some bold changes to our formal learning systems to
take advantage of what technology can help us do to improve the quality
and richness of the learning experience.

Prof Dylan Wiliam, Deputy Director at the Institute of Education
University of London, has taught in inner-city schools, directed a large-
scale testing programme, trained teachers, served in university
administration, and pursued several research projects focused on
supporting teachers to develop their use of assessment in support of
learning. His keynote, 'Assessment, learning and technology: prospects at
the periphery of control', will explore some of the ways in which
technology will change how learners are assessed and enable teachers to
respond better to learners' needs.

Details of keynote speakers are at
http://www.alt.ac.uk/altc2007/keynotes.html

310 submissions were received for the programme, including research
papers, workshops, posters and symposia, and these are being reviewed
during March and April. The programme will feature a range of
presentations to cater for all sections of the learning technology
community. Details of pre- and post-conference workshops are at
http://www.alt.ac.uk/altc2007/pre_and_post.html

Earlybird registration closes 30 June and the final deadline for
registration is 10 August. Register now at
http://www.alt.ac.uk/altc2007/registering.html

The exhibition is now fully booked, so early booking for ALT-C 2008 is
advised (contact Hayley Willis on [log in to unmask]).
