COSIT’07 is now accepting applications for the Doctoral Colloquium. To
participate in the Doctoral Colloquium, PhD students are required to
submit a brief summary of their work (no more than 1500 words) in
addition to a brief biography (no more than 300 words). A template is
available at www.cosit.info. Applications should be submitted by email
to Alex Klippel ([log in to unmask]) by 20 May 2007.

A notification of acceptance will be send out by 15 June 2007. Accepted
applicants for the Doctoral Colloquium will have to register for the
conference before 22 June 2007; details of registration will follow soon
on the COSIT’07 webpage (http://www.cosit.info).

POSTER SCHOLARSHIPS
===================
Thanks to the generosity of PSMA Australia Ltd there are some student
scholarships for poster authors available. Additionally the CRCSI
provides a limited number of travel scholarships for CRCSI poster
authors. Details for applications for these scholarships can be found on
the COSIT’07 webpage (http://www.cosit.info). COSIT’07 also acknowledges
the generous poster session sponsoring by Shell.

DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM SCHOLARSHIPS
================================
Thanks to Google's enthusiasm for young researchers, Google COSIT'07
Student Scholarships are available for participants of the Doctoral
Colloquium: To apply please submit a brief statement (email to
[log in to unmask]) explaining why attendance at COSIT'07 is important to
you. The deadline for applications is jointly with the deadline for
applications for the Doctoral Colloquium. More details for these

TOPIC AND TARGET GROUP
======================
The Eighth International Conference on Spatial Information Theory,
COSIT'07, is concerned with theoretical aspects of space, time, and
spatial information. Of special interest are aspects of "large-scale"
space, i.e. spaces too large to be apprehended at once without
technological aid. These include spaces of geographic and environmental
scales in which humans make decisions and carry out actions. Spatial
information theory also deals with the formal and natural description of
processes and events in spatial environments, thus providing a
foundation for the design and construction of geographic information
systems (GIS) and for spatial information systems (SIS) in general.
Empirical investigations, formal models, and the use of spatial
information technologies reveal a large number of interesting research
questions which require an interdisciplinary approach for their
solution. The COSIT conference series brings together researchers from
many disciplines and topics, in particular:

     * Cognitive, Perceptual, and Environmental Psychology
     * Geography and Geoinformation Science
     * Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cognitive Science
     * Engineering and Human Factors
     * Cognitive Anthropology, Psycholinguistics and Linguistics
     * Ontology of the Geospatial Domain
     * Architecture, Planning, and Environmental Design

An idea of the conference's orientation can be gained from the previous
COSIT proceedings published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer
Science series. The following (non-exclusive) topics (listed
alphabetically) are indicative of the field of interest:

     * activity-based models of spatial knowledge
     * cognitive structure of spatial knowledge
     * cooperative work with spatial information
     * events and processes in geographic space
     * incomplete or imprecise spatial knowledge
     * languages of spatial relations
     * naive geography/behavioral geography
     * navigation by organisms and robots
     * ontology of space
     * presentation/communication of spatial information
     * quality issues in geographic information
     * social and cultural organization of space
     * spatial and temporal reasoning
     * spatial data integration/interoperability
     * spatial decision-support systems
     * structure of geographic information
     * time in geographic information
     * user-interface design/spatialization of interfaces

CONFERENCE PROGRAM
==================
At the conference, results from recent research are presented and
discussions about advanced work in progress take place. The conference
program is established by an international and multidisciplinary program
committee. Papers are selected through a rigorous review of full paper
contributions by internationally renowned reviewers, based on relevance
to the conference, intellectual quality, scientific significance,
novelty, relation to previously published literature, and clarity of
presentation. The proceedings are published by Springer in the Lecture
Notes in Computer Science series before the conference. The day before
the conference, international workshops on topics relevant to the
conference are offered. Topical meetings ("birds-of-a-feather sessions")
can be organized. A Doctoral Colloquium, facilitated by a small panel of
experienced researchers, will conclude the conference. It is intended as
a forum where PhD students can meet, present their research, and hold
discussions with others at a similar stage in their careers.

KEYNOTES
========
     * Mandyam Srinivasan, Research School of Biological Sciences,
Australian National University, Australian Federation Fellow, elected to
the Australian Academy of Science in 1995 and to the Royal Society of
London in 2001. “Srini cracked the code of vision in the world of bees,
demonstrating that the motion of the passing landscape provides the bee
with a third dimension to vision. This is how bees regulate their flight
and ensure a safe landing” (from a laudation on the occasion of the 2006
Prime Minister’s Prize for Sciene).

     * Kim Marriott, Information Technology, Monash University,
Australia. Prof Marriott is interested in the formalization of
understanding and reasoning with diagrammatic notations such as finite
state diagrams or house plans, in particular, grammatical and logical
approaches to the specification and recognition of such visual languages.

     * Deborah McGuinness is the acting director and senior research
scientist at Knowledge Systems, Artificial Intelligence Laboratory,
Stanford University. She is a leading expert in knowledge representation
and reasoning languages and systems and has worked in ontology creation
and evolution environments for over 20 years. Most recently, Deborah is
best known for her leadership role in semantic web research, and for her
work on explanation, trust, and applications of semantic web technology,
particularly for scientific applications.
