Yes, I back Doug on the usefulness of Bakhtin. I also read Benjamin on
'storytelling' with interest. I have an English novelist friend, of the
thriller variety and TV shows, who keeps me grounded. I sent him my thesis
proposal some years ago, which was full of the words I thought They wanted
to hear, and he wrote back: 'Andrew, that sounds fine for their purposes,
but you didn't use the word "story" once.' I kept that in mind as I wrote -
a one-word 'theory', backed up by many books on Narratology <g>
