The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) is the UK's Centre of Excellence for research in the land and freshwater environmental sciences. Our parent body is the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). CEH's staff have specialist skills in a wide range of environmental disciplines, ranging in scale from the gene to the whole Earth systems. Our research is aimed at improving our understanding of both the environment and the processes that underlie the Earth's support systems. CEH is particularly interested in the impacts of human activity on natural environments. CEH aims to generate workable solutions to today's pressing problems, so that healthy, wealthy and sustainable environment can be enhanced and maintained in the UK and worldwide. CEH Wallingford is the largest CEH site and the building also houses staff from the British Geological Survey and the Meteorological Office.
ROLE:
The post holder will be heading the Environmental Information Centre (EIC) within the Environmental Informatics Section.
The EIC will form the NERC Designated Data Centre (DDC) for CEH with responsibility for data standards, quality assurance and long-term curation of data and materials collected under NERC funding. The EIC will also be responsible for implementation of NERC data policy with CEH's science areas.
You will manage a group of data specialists who will support data related activities across CEH and in support of science projects with NERC Directed and Non-Directed mode programmes. The group will need to establish data standards and policy within CEH and, supported by the Informatics Liaison Officer network, over-see the data management plans established for both CEH projects and with NERC-grant holders. The EIC will have to work with other NERC DDCs and collaborative centres both in developing NERC data policy and in supporting multi-disciplinary programmes. The EIC will also have an important role to play in support of the Informatics Liaison Officers within CEH who are dealing with the day-to-day data management and informatics issues within CEH Science Sections.
Main activities and duties will be:
· Manage the EIC from CEH and NERC DDC perspective (strategic plan, people, budgets, reporting etc).
· Responsible for implementing NERC data standards and data management policy within CEH and for NERC grantees.
· Establish a quality assurance system for data curation within CEH.
· Ensure data management plans are implemented across CEH projects.
· Ensure that EIC supports CEH science sections in data management via the SLO network.
· Liaise with other NERC DDCs in developing and implementing NERC data policy.
· Be part of the Environmental Informatics Programme (EIP) Senior Management Team.
· Contribute to EIP strategic planning.
· Liaise with science sections to establish their requirements.
SKILLS REQUIRED
a.. Good leadership skills.
b.. Strong management techniques.
c.. Knowledge of NERC data policy and role of DDCs.
d.. Proven track record in delivering and managing the delivery of projects on time and on budget.
e.. Knowledge of PRINCE2 (or ability to develop necessary knowledge and expertise with appropriate training.
The Head of the EIC will be part of the senior management team for the EIP. They will be trained in new software tools and management practice where necessary.
The post holder will be working with the Environmental Informatics Section and the Informatics Liaison and Special Projects Section, reporting to the Director of Environmental Informatics. The post holder will be required to liaise with scientists in particular science areas or sections and establish their requirements. Therefore, a scientific background, while not essential, would be an advantage. Good team working skills are essential as is the ability to adapt to rapidly changing technologies.
Salary
The salary for this post is £33,970 progressing to £44,540 per annum. In addition NERC offer a pension scheme, 30 days' annual leave and 10½ days' public and privilege holiday per annum.
