Dear all,
I apologise for cross posting.
I am a researcher at the National Museum of Wales
working on an exhibition to commemorate the abolition
of the slave trade in 1807.
In our exhibition we are intending to exhibit a number
of manillas. Manillas were brass or copper `horse
shoe` shaped trinkets which were used as currency to
purchase slaves on the West Coast of Africa.
As part of my research I am trying to ascertain how
many manillas were needed to purchase one slave.
The manillas that we have are the brass type
manufactured in Birmingham betweeen 1750 and 1850. The
diameter is approx 61 mm on the outside.
If anybody can offer any suggestions or advice, I
would be extremely grateful.
Many thanks
David Morris
