Thanks for the comment, fspecial is an image processing toolbox function.
The fixed version of the Multifocal tool is now in
http://neuro.hut.fi/~vanni/data/Multifocal.zip . Now there is also a
Multifocal.tar file in the same folder.
Now it bypasses image smoothing if you do not have the fspecial function.
