NCeSS Showcase - New Research Tools for Social Scientists

Over the last 3 years the ESRC National Centre for e-Social Science
(www.ncess.ac.uk) has co-ordinated the development of new research tools
which harness the power of Grid computing for social scientists.

We would like to invite you to attend a showcase of these tools at the
University of Manchester from the 27th-29th March.

The three days will be of benefit to those working in Social Science and
others involved in Grid Computing, by updating them with recent
developments which can improve research methods and research times, as
well as informing them of trends and software which will impact on them in
the future.

A full programme is available on our website but amongst others, sessions
will cover:

-A look at relevant developments in Grid Computing at an
international/national and regional level

-A showcase of NCeSS successes including tools for virtual urban
environments, the semantic web and the collaborative analysis of audio-
visual qualitative data.

-An exploration of the benefits of Web2.0 technologies (as well as a
chance to separate the opportunity from the hype)

-Forthcoming developments from the National Grid Service
(http://www.grid-support.ac.uk/)

-P-Grade and how it can help with workflow visualisation
(http://www.cpc.wmin.ac.uk/ngsportal/)

For a full programme, more details, and to register a place, please visit
http://www.ncess.ac.uk/events/showcase/

If you would like to attend this event please register at
Please note that registration is free but places are highly limited so
early registration is recommended.

FREE OUR DATA?

Should social researchers have unlimited access to the data that
Government collects about individual UK citizens? Would the benefits of
better evidence on which to base social policy outweigh concerns about
privacy? Experts from academia and government will offer their views and
respond to questions from the audience.

Attend in person or watch via a live webcast.
Date: 15th March 2007
Location: University of Manchester
Time: 6pm – 8pm (GMT)

This event is being organised by the ESRC National Centre for e-Social
Science (http://www.ncess.ac.uk/) as part of the ESRC Festival of Social
Science (http://www.esrc.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/FSS/) and will be run in
conjunction with The Guardians Free Our Data? campaign.
