medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I think we've discussed this before, so it would be worth your while to look
at the archives of this list. Certainly, apart from the mendicant orders
and beneficed priests, a licence was needed from the diocesan bishop to
allow people to preach. if you look at the indexes of the episcopal
registers published by the Canterbury and York Society (among others), you
will find plenty of instances of this.
There is plenty on late medieval preaching in the Royal Historical
Society's online bibliography: www.rhs.ac.uk/bibl.
I am sure others will give you more information.
Kind Regards,
Rosemary Hayes
