medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The Carmelites, Observant Franciscans and I think Dominicans all
quarrelled over whether or not Scotland came within the English
province. I'm not sure whether you want information on houses outwith
England, but in case you do:
For Scotland, you should probably start with "Medieval Religious
Houses: Scotland", ed. D.E. Easson and I.B. Cowan (2nd edn, London:
Longman, 1976).
For the Dominicans in Scotland, Janet Foggie's "Renaissance Religion in
Urban Scotland: The Dominican Order 1450-1560" (Leiden: Brill, 2003) I
think outlines the earlier history of the Order in Scotland, which may
correct Easson and Cowan in some points.
For the Carmelites in Scotland, there is K. Egan, ‘Medieval Carmelite
Houses, Scotland’, Carmelus xix (1972) and I think some other articles
by Fr Egan as well - but I don't know if this includes anything not in
Easson & Cowan. Apparently there were various controversies over the
separation of Scotland from the English province from the 1290s
(surprise!). I can send you my rather scrappy notes on this as an
attachment, if you like.
John Durkan, 'The Observant Franciscan Province in Scotland', Innes
Review 35, may possibly be of interest.
I hope this is of some use!
