The PhD positions are open to any of the research groups mentioned in the
introduction above.
To obtain a PhD degree in one of the institute's areas of research you will
work under the guidance of a supervisor on a scientific research project. In
addition to the research component which aims at completion of the doctoral
dissertation within four years, the programme has an educational component
comprising curricular and extra-curricular training activities. To prepare
yourself for your doctoral dissertation you will take part in a study
programme of the National Research Institute your project is connected to.
At the start of the graduate programme a study plan will be drafted.

Located within one of the Netherlands oldest and largest universities,
Utrecht University's Faculty of Arts and the Humanities/Arts has nineteen
degree programs in the languages and letters of Europe and the Middle-East,
the various arts and media, and in history. Research programs are organized
into two institutes with extensive national and international links. Special
attention is paid to interdisciplinary collaboration, the use of new media,
and the quality of teaching. The Faculty is housed in the historic city
centre and enjoys excellent facilities.
Over 300 researchers are employed by the Onderzoekinstituut voor
Geschiedenis en Cultuur (Research Institute for History and Culture): OGC.
The research of OGC is divided into eleven groups: classical antiquity,
medieval culture, cultural history, media studies, music history, art
history, (early) modern literature, eastern studies, international political
history, socio-economic history and women's studies. Some of this research,
namely the contract research, is done on behalf of third parties.
Internationalisation is a high priority within the OGC. It has exchange
contracts with a number of foreign universities including the prestigious
UCLA in the United States.
The Research Institute for History and Culture (OGC) has three positions
available per September 1, 2007.

Employment basis: Temporary for specified period

Additional conditions of employment:
We offer three PhD positions (0,8 fte) with a one year contract beginning
September 1, 2007 (four days per week). After a positive evaluation this
contract can be extended to a maximum of three more years (a total of four
years maximum). This provides graduates with an opportunity to finish their
doctoral dissertation in four years, funded by the OGC. The PhD students,
also referred to as doctoral candidates, take courses too.
Salary rising from € 1,956.- a month during the first year to € 2,502.- in
the fourth year on a fulltime basis and we offer solid benefits.
