What is the Martin Award?
The Martin Award was established in honour of Mr and Mrs Martin in the 1950s by the then Association of Assistant Librarians (now the Career Development Group) who both served for many hears as Hon. Joint Education Officers to the Association. The Martin Award was originally a prize of £5 awarded to the candidate with the highest marks in the Library Association's Entrance Examination amongst those who had prepared by the Association's correspondence courses. This was of course back in the days before the proliferation of university education for librarians when most librarians qualified by evening class attendance and correspondence courses over and above the day job in the library.
The modern incarnation of the Martin Award is as a bi-annual award made to encourage the development of members of the profession and to stimulate their active contributions to the professional press through contributing to Impact.
The Martin Award is sponsored by Intellident http://www.intellident.co.uk/ and currently consists of £50 prize money, a day pass to Umbrella and travel expenses to Umbrella.
The Martin Award is presented at the Umbrella Awards Dinner on Thursday 28th June.
