Dear Colleagues,

I recently ran across an article by Khurshed Alam (

which depicts an EEZ claim for Bangladesh with
lateral limits along meridians of longitude through
the termini of the land
boundaries. I am unaware of such a claim being
published by the government of
Bangladesh. If anyone has further information on this
claim, I would
appreciate a reply.

an official or nearly official view from dhaka in 2003

suggest the western terminus or point number 1 of the
peculiar but official bangladeshi coastal baseline

& situated at nlat21d12m x elong89d06m45s some 18nm
southward or seaward of south talpatty
lies in fact a couple of minutes westward too from
this disputed island

indeed based on the best map i could find

the baseline terminus would appear to lie a good deal
farther west of the island than east of the indian
bank of the border river mouth

& this notwithstanding the rather more balanced
looking view presented by the map on pdf p81 in the
link just below

but in any case these data do suggest the western
maritime claim limit of bangladesh may proceed if not
due south from the land boundary terminus with india
then possibly even a hair west of due south there

conversely however on the myanmar side
even such outlying bangladeshi islands to the east &
south as are mentioned & mapped on pdf p51 here

do not prevent the eastern limit of the official
baseline & actual or potential maritime claim from
deflecting a bit westward from the land boundary
terminus
rather than projecting quite due south there
since the baseline terminus on the east

is situated actually several minutes west of the land
boundary terminus & islands

claim a rectangular orientation & the full extent of

since that effect occurs or would occur no more than

than triangular & shut

for such views
