Dear Abi
I think Tarkovsky's Nostalghia uses sequences of images to give visual
expression to Gorchakov's interior thoughts. The whole film has a private
feel to it, but Tarkovsky uses these pure visual passages to portray
Gorchakov's mental condition, similar in the way the soliloquies in
Shakespeare's Hamlet retard the action in order to open up the wrestlings of
Hamlet's mind to the audience. Often the voice-over in movies is used to
convey the thoughts of the main character, but Tarkovsky's approach is
arresting for trying to use images to expand the interior moment. I dare say
dreams in other Tarkovsky films share some of the private qualities of
Nostalghia.
