British, Swedish and Austrian entrepreneurs win the
EU's "Nobel prize" for ICT (16 March 2007)A communications solution that offers businesses access to fixed-line phone services anytime, anywhere, an automatic scanner that digitises books in minutes and a software translation system that avoids the need for reprogramming are the Grand Prize winners of the European Information and Communication Technology (ICT) awards for 2007. These three Grand Prizes worth EUR 200,000 each, were won by British, Swedish and Austrian firms. Seventeen more prizes, of EUR 5,000 each, were awarded to ground-breaking technologies from five other countries. The 20 prize winners were selected by the European Commission from a record number of 450 applicants, from 30 countries.

Telecommunications: Commission welcomes the Italian
regulator's decision to abandon the proposal to regulate
value-added services (16 March 2007)On 16 March, the Italian telecoms regulator, AGCOM, informed the Commission that it is withdrawing its draft measure relating to the market for value-added services (including directory assistance services) on mobile networks. In its letter of 8 February 2007 to AGCOM the Commission expressed doubts over AGCOM's market definition and the existence of competition problems which would harm consumers or call for ex-ante regulation.

Informal Telecom Council in Hannover : substantial progress
on Roaming (16 March 2007)The EU's 27 Telecom Ministers gathered on 15 March at the CEBIT IT fair in Hannover/Germany for an informal EU Telecom Council to discuss the roaming proposal. Substantial progress has been made on this issue. EU Commissioner Viviane Reding attended the meeting. An ambitious EU regulation that will reduce roaming charges by up to 70 per cent for citizens in the EU is now within reach and could be agreed upon in June. This will be achieved by a combination of compulsory caps both at wholesale and at retail level, following the Commission proposal of July last year. The next important steps are the vote in the European Parliament in May and the formal Telecom Council on 6 and 7 June. The Commission now calls on the European Parliament and the German Council Presidency to work very closely together in the weeks to come to ensure that consumers will feel the positive effects of the new EU regulation already this summer.
