Daved and Chris and Steve (Taylor)
I appreciate these notes and I also appreciate what you have done for the
Academy. I HOPE that at least the spirit of "Academy arts" still has some
life in it...

This certainly brings back some memories--all the grief that went on as
those of us involved with the Academy Arts variously lobbied for and then
somewhat bitterly acquiesced to its ending. In retrospect I think this is
one of those things that should have been continued somehow. Not so much
with exhibitions of AoM's artworks; rather, I think the 'village square' or
agora intention should have been pushed more. AoM has become such a huge
beast and despite the 'rounding of its corners' over these last few years,
it remains a largely impersonal and culturally vacuous conference. Maybe
that's just a liability of size though--there have been numerous efforts to
humanize the conference (meditation groups, the Fringe Café, David Boje's
many on-the-edge programs), but in the 25 years I've gone, I've rarely had
the kind of deepening and thought-provocation that I get at the smaller
conferences. I would be curious to see how a gigantic open-space format
would work with AoM, maybe supplemented by the kinds of cultural encounters
we get with the other AoM (Art of Mgmt).
Jean, thanks for taking the time to pen that article--and for championing
the whole Academy Arts venture in the first place. It was a great effort and
certainly heightened AoM members' questionning of AoM's identity. Nice that
it got you into photography as well! D

Dear Friends of Art in the Academy of Management,
As many of you know AcademyArts had its last exhibition along with
the Fringe Cafe in Honolulu in 2005. Jean Bartunek who really started
it all has written a pince for Danny Gioia's section of The Journal
of Management Inquiry. I am passing along both Danny's editorial
introduction and Jean's article. I trust that you will find these
present interesting perspectives on the life and death of art in the
Academy.
Cheers
Chris
