'Some' is sadly an understatement. Many of these traces are uploaded
after a day of mapping - deliberately winding one's way to cover as many
streets as possible in a given area... they will in no way be indicative
of real journeys.
Some people, however, just upload traces collected as a 'by product' of
having satnav and going about their normal day. You could probably
collect several such samples with a polite mail to the OpenStreetMap
discussion list. And in and amongst those 11092 are traces from taxi
drivers and couriers, which might also prove interesting in their own right.
Best,
Tom.
PS if this is all of interest, I might also point out
www.cabspotting.org made by my colleagues at Stamen, which provides XML
feeds of live cab locations in San Francisco. I believe Google offers
maps of the same for most US cities, but I don't know how accessible the
data is.
