I'd be grateful for people's experience or suggestions in re-indexing an
old archive. Can anyone suggest a proven approach, or a service company
that performed well?
My company is planning a major piece of work on a group of oil platforms.
It will begin with an wide-ranging series of technical studies, based on
the existing documentation and drawings.
These platforms were designed in the 1970's, built in the 1980's, and
modified and upgraded fairly continuously since then. The recent
documentation and drawings are electronic, but a lot of the earlier records
are still paper or microfiche.
Our index to these hard copy archives is not now very useful. Indexing
practices have changed a lot over the last thirty years, the company has
also reorganised several times, and most of the people originally involved
have retired. So we are looking at re-indexing tens of thousands of boxes.
First thoughts are to prioritise the work in batches in some way, then
recruit a mixture of contractors, to do the keyboard work, and company
pensioners, who understand the material.
Any thoughts, anybody?
