Mental Health and Human Rights: Sociological Perspectives
A one day symposium to take place at the University of Warwick on Friday 22nd June 2007 and hosted by the BSA (Medsoc) Sociology of Mental Health Study Group
Call for Papers
We are pleased to announce that the Sociology of Mental Health Study Group of the British Sociological Association's Medical Sociology Group will be holding its second annual symposium in June this year. The theme of this event is mental health and human rights, an area which has gained considerable attention in social, political and legal debate in recent years. Concerns have related to matters of mental health and distress in themselves, as well as to the provision of services, and to policy and legal frameworks, with discussion and developments taking place at national, international and global levels. These have occurred, for example, in the context of the new Mental Health Acts in Britain, as well as the U.K. Human Rights Act and the European Convention on Human Rights, and with the World Health Organisation declaring enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and well-being as a fundamental human right.
This one day symposium aims to approach this important area from a sociological perspective. It aims to consider what sociologists can contribute to knowledge and understanding relating to mental health and human rights, and what implications concerns in this area have for the practice of sociologists. We therefore welcome submissions of abstracts addressing sociological issues and concerns relating to the above. These may include:
- mental health and access to mental health services as human rights, and how these rights are or are not being met in contemporary societies;
- mental health inequalities or inequalities in mental health services as contraventions of these rights;
- the social, cultural and political conditions surrounding mental and emotional distress, as well as mental health work, in terms of assuring or violating human rights;
- the right to political expression relating to matters of mental health and how this is being met or suppressed in current social and political climates.
We also invite papers which address the sociological agenda and sociological practice more broadly in relation to the symposium theme. Papers may discuss empirical research, or be reflective, methodological or theoretical in nature. It is hoped that submissions will be received from those of varying backgrounds, including academics, mental health service users, practitioners and providers, and those involved in mental health organisations or campaign work.
Abstracts of up to 250 words, along with name and contact details of the author(s), should be submitted by Friday 30th March to: Lydia Lewis, Department of Sociology, Ramphal Building, University of Warwick, Coventry, CV32 5HE; E-mail: [log in to unmask]; Tel. 02476 523120; or Louise Woodward, Research and Development, Nottinghamshire NHS (Mental Health) Trust, Duncan Macmillan House, Porchester Road, Nottingham, NG6 3AA; Tel. 0115 9691300; E-mail: [log in to unmask] Notification of acceptance of abstracts for the symposium will be by Friday 13th April.
The fee for attendance will be £5 for BSA members, £10 for non-members, with a limited number of free places available for students and those who are unwaged. (Registration for the event will follow the abstract submission deadline.) We also hope to be able to contribute towards travel costs for student and unwaged presenters. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
