I used to wonder why names and addresses and intimate details of those
involved in court cases were published with such glee and gusto by the
newspapers...
I have now come to realise that (counterintuitively to modern eyes) this
on of our fundamental freedoms . .
If the Executive has to publish the identity of those it tries and
punishes, then no man may be condemned in secret . .
This ancient rule is embodied in Art 6.1, which says that in addition to
being fair, a hearing has to be public.
