>From a public library viewpoint - we have a limit set on the reader's card which prevents them from doing anything if they have a certain amount of money in their account or books which are very overdue. As our ILL package is linked to circulation a warning comes up when this reader tries to place an ILL with a member of staff and the fines have to be paid or books renewed/returned before they are able to proceed. At the moment we do not have a process for readers to place ILL requests directly unless they send an email to the main library address, in this case we would check the borrower's record before processing the ILL.
Hope this is useful.
Best wishes

Subject: Processing ILL requests for defaulting library users
At Aberdeen University we charge library users for all ILL requests. We wonder what other libraries, who charge for ILLs, do about requests from defaulting users (those who at the time the request is submitted are known to have fines or outstanding invoices on their library record).
Do you refuse to process the request and inform the user that the request will not proceed until the fine is paid?
Do you process the request but only allow consultation of the loan in the library?
Do you treat the request differently if it is for a copy rather than a loan? The request has been paid for so it is processed and supplied.
Any other comments?
I will summarise responses for the list.
Thanks,
Sheona
