FROM 'LIEDERKREIS' TO THE ETERNAL RECURRENCE OF THE SAME: ON CIRCULARITY IN
GERMAN (LATE) ROMANTICISM
The circle is one of the most powerful symbols in cultural history,
representing unity, cohesion, concentration, but also endless repetition. It
links cycles in nature with spiritual dimensions. (German) Romanticism in
particular favoured the circle as opposed to the linear progression that
became closely associated with evolutionary theory. This lecture will
explore three major exponents of circular conceptions in art, literature and
thought, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Richard Wagner and Friedrich Nietzsche, and
discuss the (cultural) significance of their preoccupation with this feature
of intellectual geometry.
Professor Goerner is the current Chair of the German Department at Queen
Mary, and Founding Director of the Centre for Anglo-German Cultural Relations.
