Hello all,
London based FISH folk might be interested in the following, picked up from a British Computer Society mailing list... booking form (£15 to attend) is available via the link below.

Professor Keith van Rijsbergen will be giving a lecture
sponsored by the Computer Journal: "The Geometry of
Information Retrieval and the Dimensions of Perception"
on the 28 February at 6pm in central London. I have
booked a place for myself; the abstract from the Web
page is given below...
: Over the last few decades several information
: retrieval models have been invented. Their
: specification has relied heavily on the use of formal
: logic, probability, and vector space theory. Recently
: the importance of 'context' has been recognised as
: affecting the effectiveness of information retrieval.
:
: Keith van Rijsbergen will show how logic, probability,
: and vectors can be represented in Hilbert space
: thereby creating a geometric framework within which
: different information retrieval models can be
: combined.
:
: By analogy with the analysis of observables and
: measurement in Quantum Theory an approach to modelling
: context for information retrieval will be described.
: Concrete examples of some of the abstract concepts and
: processes will be given.
