Dyscalculia and Dyslexia in Higher Education
“Pathways to Progress”

The Dyscalculia and Dyslexia Interest Group conference 2007, "Pathways to Progress", will be a full 
day and will offer two main presentations and some optional group sessions. The optional 
sessions will run in parallel, providing an opportunity for discussion, and these will cover a wide 
range of topics. Delegates can select 3 sessions of their choice. The conference will be of interest 
to support tutors and academic staff who work with dyscalculic and dyslexic students in H.E. and 
F.E., as well as to those who provide support in mathematics.

•	Back to Basics
Pauline Clayton, Principal Tutor for Mathematics, Dyslexia Action

The presentation is designed to provide an overview, particularly for the non-specialist teacher/
lecturer, of the connections between dyslexia and mathematical skills and where dyscalculia fits 
into this profile. It will also include an analysis of the skills needed for mental calculation, 
particularly in the light of a dyslexic individual’s profile, and a summary of the different learning 
styles that learners employ in mathematics.

•	Student-led technology: practical solutions to making technology work.
Dr. Geraldine A. Price, Fellow, School of Education, University of Southampton 

This session explores the need to bridge the gulf between good
educational practice and pragmatic and practical solutions to making technology work effectively 
to support dyslexic writing difficulties. Case study research provides the voice of the dyslexic 
student in HE.
