Editorial

I am aware that over the past few weeks quite a large number of
people have freshly signed up to DRN. My thanks to Ken Friedman
for his hard work in publicising DRN widely, and a warm welcome
to all our new readers. I hope you enjoy this publication.

Some time ago, DRS introduced a new grade of membership, Fellow,
which is a recognition of experience as a researcher over some
years, coupled with significant published outputs. So far, it
has been a bootstrapping process as the initial team was
elected. This team, under the Chair of Professor Nigel Cross,
is now in place to assess all future applications.

It is with considerable pleasure therefore that I point you to
the announcement below which is a general call for existing DRS
members to apply for Fellowship. Of course, if you are not
already a member but would like to apply for Fellowship, now is
your opportunity to become a member first!

Sadly, Patrick Purcell died a few days ago. Several people have
written to me expressing their long held views of him. He was
clearly well liked by a great many, including his research
students (both ex and recent). My best memory was watching him
advising a room of PhD students in a forum at the Open
University: no matter what the topic, he had something masterful
to say, and it was delivered in such a genial and kind manner.
I have rarely met such a lovely person. I'm sure he will be
missed by many. The 'memorial' website is well worth a visit.

And finally, don't forget that the final date for abstracts
submissions to the IASDR conference, Hong Kong 2007, is this
coming Tuesday.

Emerging Trends in Design Research

Design Research is becoming more acceptable as a knowledge
resource in collaborative actions, in practical applications, in
building scholarly foundations for the discipline, and in
post-graduate programmes worldwide. Some research follows
well-worn paths of investigation and development, and some
research strikes out into new territories of disciplinary
overlap, technology development and application, large system
dynamics, difficult to solve social problems, fundamental
knowledge development, or needs for better processes or methods.
Emerging Trends is particularly interested in design research
explorations that respond to our changing life context,
globally, locally, economically, educationally, socially,
technologically, and particularly through design research
interventions. The following list presents some ideas that
signal emergent trends, but it is not inclusive. Your work might
be located on the list or expand it. We are interested in ideas
emerging now that will influence future developments. Here are
some emerging topics.

Designing the user experience of future peripatetic users: new
HCI design challenges in Space

Introduction

Travelling to the depths of Space is no longer a privilege of
astronauts and scientists. Space Agencies are starting to allow
those who have the means to afford it, provided that they fulfil
a minimum set of physiological requirements to join the ventures
into outer space. At the same time, companies are developing
spacecrafts for civilian use and plan huge space stations
capable of accommodating thousand of settlers. However,
micro-gravity or reduced and enhanced gravity environments
strongly influence the way users interact with technology. In
other words, what works on earth does not necessarily perform in
Space. As the age of space habitation dawns, we must work to
find ways to transfer our technological advances on Earth to
Outer Space

The Overall objective of the Book

This book aims to present significant projects carried out in
academia, space agencies and in industry regarding the quality
of the user experience with interactive systems in Space. The
idea is to promote awareness of interdisciplinary work
concerning methods and tools for HCI in Space in order to be
ready for the future life beyond the terrestrial atmosphere and
to share knowledge to develop innovative interactive systems on
Earth. A crucial problem when designing HCI for Space systems
refers to the validity of data gathering and the realism of user
scenarios. Ethnographic on-site studies and evaluation methods
show that some problems concerning the user behaviour and
environment are only identified when capturing the rich texture
of activity being performed in the field.

The Target Audience

Educators, and Researchers in HCI, managers of HCI projects
working in Space and mobile industry (telecom companies, device
manufacturers, service providers, game designers, etc.);
industrial designers; new media trends sociologists; new media
journalists; human factors practitioners; interface evaluators,
information architects, designers and testers. The book is
intended to provide valuable material to be used for research
and teaching purposes (in any curricula including communication
and information systems in its set of disciplines). This book is
also intended to be useful for designers and engineers that need
concrete materials to understand the user experiences in social
practices and to evaluate the applications used and combined.

RECCOMENDED TOPICS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE
FOLLOWING:

- Technological, cultural, political, philosophical,
psychological and economic dimensions of future pervasive and
interactive communication systems;

- New challenges in pervasive communication systems in Space:
new users and uses, interoperability amongst interfaces,
tangible computing, intelligent environments, context awareness,
etc;

- Innovative research approaches for the creation of
operationally relevant and realistic future scenarios;

- Taxonomy of radically new applications;

- Art expressions (e.g. locative art) in space and patterns
for smart & malleable digital content;

- Advanced interaction models (immersive & intelligent
environments, humanising interfaces, haptics, etc);

- Transferring interaction patterns between usage areas (e.g.
games, Space industry, medical, etc);

- Advanced evaluation techniques for pervasive systems in
Space.

- Participatory Design and other user-centered approaches
focused on users' cultural, social, behavioural and ergonomic
backgrounds.

- Challenges of analyzing and designing to support
sociability in the Space;

- Emerging nomadic societies, communities and related
socio-cultural trends;

- Assessment of the Perceived Quality of Experience through
ethnographies, or other experimental evaluation techniques.

- Novel methodologies for services design.

Biological and algorithmic, protector of secrets and porthole
to mysteries, universal and singular, code is an invitation to
thought. Code can be "wet" (genetic, organic, human), "dry"
(digital, mathematical, logical), something in-between,
neither, or both (linguistic, symbolic, religious, moral,
legal). Code is the meeting ground of strange bedfellows, the
cipherer and decipherer, the domain of law and its subversion,
communication and privacy. Code is about patterns, sequences,
systems, translations, substitutions. It can bind, trick, and
free. Modern technologies are affording us more and more keys
to unlock nature's code and more opportunities to manipulate
it.

We welcome paper and panel submissions that explore any
type/aspect/ nature/culture of code in any period of history.
Also welcome are submissions on any aspect of science's

CfP Extension: 2007 Annual Design History Society Conference:
Design/Body/Sense

The CfP deadline for this year's annual Design History Society
conference Design/Body/Sense, to be held at Kingston University
London from 5-7 September 2007, has been extended to 28 February
2007.

As an embodiment of thought, feeling and intention, design
demands to be encountered from a bodily perspective.
Design/Body/Sense calls for the interdisciplinary engagement of
design and its histories. It suggests the bodily encounter of
design is central to its meaning and that the physical and
psychical experiences of design are contingent upon historical
processes of continuity and change.

Design/Body/Sense aims to provide a forum for academic enquiry
within the broad community of design historians. Emphasizing the
histories of bodily and sensual experiences of design this
conference aims to provide an inclusive theme for historians,
researchers, practitioners and academics working across the
various design disciplines whilst offering the opportunity for
fertile interdisciplinary engagement.

Papers are invited for the following academic strands

- Design/Body/Sense/Object
- Design/Body/Sense/Space
- Design/Body/Sense/Making
- Design/Body/Sense/Technology
- Design/Body/Sense/Self

3-5 October 2007: DEFSA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CAPE TOWN,
SOUTH AFRICA

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS/ABSTRACTS

The Design Education Forum of Southern Africa (DEFSA) is calling
for papers to be delivered at its 5th International Conference
in 2007. This conference follows on from the Design Education:
Tradition and Modernity conference, hosted by the National
Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India, in March 2005. The
Ahmedabad Declaration, issued at the end of this conference,
promoted the notion of a biennial International Design Education
Conference, to be hosted in different countries, and the
development of an international forum on Design and Education.
The Ahmedabad Declaration is available at www.defsa.org.za

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, South
Africa is hosting this year's conference, the second of the
International Design Education conferences as envisaged in the
Ahmedabad Declaration, on 3rd to 5th October 2007.

The theme for the conference is:

FLUX: Design Education in a Changing World

The purpose of the conference is to bring together theorists,
researchers, and practitioners in the fields of design and
design education to share ideas and experiences for the benefit
of design education in the international context of the
knowledge economy. Given the position of South Africa, the host
country, in the developing world, a particular sub-theme that
will be foregrounded is Design for/and Development

Various sub-themes and key-words have been identified. These
have purposely been left as broad guidelines in order to attract
papers that will fit in with researchers' key concerns and areas
of specialisation in design education and research. Following
receipt and acceptance of abstracts, key strands will be
identified which will form the basis of the final programme.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

Please indicate your intention to submit a full paper and
participate in the conference by submitting an Abstract of no
more than 200-500 words. The abstract should be a concise
statement of the problem, approach, and conclusions of the work
described. It should clearly state the paper's contribution to
the field.

The abstract should use 10 point italic Arial non-bold,
justified, single line space. Please note that if your abstract
is being submitted for blind peer review, all references to the
author(s) in the body of the paper/abstract should be removed
before submission. In addition, please note that
papers/abstracts cannot include links to websites, as this will

analyses; as well as, applications of 'cybernetics methods and
approaches' to the study of music, architecture, urban and
interior design, dance, performance, theatre, digital media and
visual arts. All proposals will be peer-reviewed and selected
based on their scholarly quality, originality and potential for
further discourse.

Paper Proposals/Abstracts should be submitted as soon as
possible but not later than March 30, 2007. Notification of
Acceptance will be sent to authors by April 16, 2007. Those
selected will be scheduled for presentation and invited to

International Design Alliance (IDA) appoints Prof. Dr. Peter Zec
as new Lead Chair

Montreal, October 3, 2006 - The Executive Boards of the
International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid)
and the International Council of Graphic Design Associations
(Icograda) are pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Dr.
Peter Zec as the new Lead Chair of the International Design
Alliance (IDA).

Prof. Dr. Zec, President of Icsid, is also President of the
internationally renowned Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in
Germany, where he has presided since 1991 and oversees the
prestigious red dot design award. "The desire for our
organisations to strengthen and grow through a collaborative
initiative such as the IDA has been an echo heard from the
design community for many years, so I am thrilled to continue
the efforts, already well received in the first year of the
IDA," stated Professor Zec. "The IDA Executive Committee will
continue to devote its attention to the development of a
sustainable framework that will allow us to address
multi-disciplinary design issues and position our organisations
in a manner that will allow both memberships to benefit from
this partnership."

The IDA is a strategic alliance established and mandated by the
General Assemblies of Icsid and Icograda for the purpose of
identifying, developing and implementing collaborative
initiatives to advance the common goals of the alliance
partners. Since its inception in 2005, the IDA has been
administered by an Executive Committee, which in turn is chaired
jointly by the presidents of Icsid and Icograda. The Lead Chair
of the Committee is appointed on an annual alternate basis.
Professor Zec assumes the position of Lead Chair, effective
immediately, following Jacques Lange, Icograda President and
Partner and Creative Director of Bluprint Design in South
Africa.

16-19 September 2007: Research Integrity Fostering Responsible
Research Lisbon, Portugal

Chaired by: Tony Mayer (European Science Foundation, FR) & Nick
Steneck (Office of Research Integrity, US)

Research regulations and commonly accepted research practices
vary significantly from country to country and among
professional organisations. There is no common definition
world-wide for research misconduct, conflict of interest or
plagiarism. Even where there is general agreement on key
elements of research behaviour, the policies that implement this
agreement can vary widely from country to country and
organization to organization. The research community worldwide
has to address these problems in order to retain public
confidence and to establish a clear best practice frameworks at
an international level. It must do so at a time when there are
increased pressures on the research system.

The September 2007 Conference represents an initial effort to
establish a framework for continued discussion of research
integrity on a global level. It is the first global forum
convened to provide researchers, research administrators,
research sponsors, journal editors, representatives from
professional societies, policymakers, and others an opportunity
to discuss strategies for harmonizing research misconduct
policies and fostering responsible conduct in research.
Attendance will be limited and by invitation to ensure
geographical and experience balances. A maximum of 350 places
will be available.

Confirmed Speakers will include: Bertil Andersson, Chief
Executive, European Science Foundation; Christine Boesz,
Inspector General, US National Science Foundation; Jose-Mariano
Gago, Minister of Science, Portugal; Manuel Heitor, Ministry of
Science, Portugal; Motoyuki Ono, President, Japan Society for
the Promotion of Science; Chris Pascal, Director, Office of
Research Integrity; Janos Potocnick, European Commissioner for
Research.

Preliminary Programme & Pre-Registration
<http://www2.esf.org/asp/form/wcori/esfriaf.asp> Form are
accessible on-line from
www.esf.org/conferences/researchintegrity (Ctrl + Click to
follow the link). Closing date for applications 27 April 2007.

Support to attend the Conference has been made available by the
International Council for Science (ICSU) to assist participants
from countries other than Members of the OECD or official OECD
Observer countries (China and Russia). Financial assistance may
also be available to cover part/all of the cost of
registration/travel/accommodation for younger researchers and
scholars under the age of 35 years or within 5 years of having
achieved a doctorate qualification. Grant requests should be
made by ticking appropriate field(s) in the paragraph "Financial
Support" of the pre-registration form.
