Hardly a day (let alone a Friday) seems to go by without some new public
sector data sharing story.
Yesterday it was the people managing the switch from Analogue TV to
Digital, complaining that they couldn't work out [1] to whom to give a
free Set Top Box, as the DWP wouldn't give them a list of people on
Income Support. But luckily, they claim law is being changed next year
so that they can (anyone know if this is a general or specific change?)
Today, it the police running the Sexual Offences Register, who are
apparently starting to clean it using DWP information: "while offenders
or those under suspicion will often provide incorrect information to the
police, they will often provide accurate data to other parts of
government - especially when they are due to receive money."
[1] Although my local leisure centre seems to be able to work such
things out for the purposes of subsidised membership.
