Subject: [Aus-archivists] Keeping Archives 3rd Edition

Posted on behalf of Jackie Bettington

For many years Keeping Archives has been a key publication of the
Australian Society of Archivists Inc. and a valuable resource for all
archives. Keeping Archives was self-published in 1987 by the ASA as a
basic resource 'for those who are interested in or have been given
responsibility for the keeping of archives.' (Preface, Keeping Archives,
p.ix). Keeping Archives, 2nd edition (or KAII) was published in 1993 by
DW Thorpe in conjunction with the ASA. This edition built 'upon the
strong foundations provided by the first edition.' (Preface, Keeping
Archives II, p. xi).

Since 1993 much has changed in the archival and publishing worlds. Not
only do we have an international standard in records management, but we
also have a suite of national and international standards and new
networks, such as the aus-archivists list serve and a wealth of other
resources available through the internet. Traditional book publishing
has been challenged by the ease and immediacy of online publishing. In
this context, a third edition of Keeping Archives (KAIII) is greatly
needed.

To assist the KAIII project team and the ASA Council in determining the
most appropriate publication format and strategy, we are encouraging
members and others (including students and allied professionals), to
provide feedback on the form of publication for KAIII and other matters.
An online survey has been prepared for this purpose. This survey seeks
your views on the form of the publication and to confirm the value of
the topics included and also seeks to better understand the needs of all
potential purchasers of KAIII.

To access the survey go to:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=113103210388

Further instructions are available at this site. Depending on the amount
of feedback you provide, the survey should take about 15 minutes to
complete.

If you would like to participate in the survey but would prefer a survey
form mailed or emailed to you, please contact Jackie Bettington (details
below).

To ensure the Society's premier monograph continues to be a valuable and
relevant resource we need your feedback. Please complete the survey and
send details about the survey to anyone you believe would contribute to
this consultation process. Each completed survey received by 20 March
2007 that includes the name and contact details of the responded will be
entered into a draw for a free copy of Keeping Archives, 3rd Edition.
The winner will be announced in the ASA Bulletin and relevant
list-serves.

Regards

Jackie
