Dear 'Anthropology Matters' Subscribers,
I am recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed anthropology
journal - Suomen Antropologi: Journal of the Finnish Anthropology Society.
It has been a small but tenacious publication over the past four decades,
with some very illustrious contributors, but current editorial ambition is
to raise its international profile and circulation - to which end English
has recently been nominated the sole language of publication.
Further 'publicity' is planned, firstly through licensing it with EBSCO,
which is now underway - through advertising in the Journals editied by
some of its international Editorial Board and their colleagues, and then
by approaching University Libraries and similar outlets across the
academic world. We have yet to set a 'public' subscription (it will be
modest) - and, indeed, plan to send the next four issues 'gratis'
as 'advertisement' to any university library which you, or anyone you
know, can recommend as a potential future subscriber. Please see the
Journal's web page for details on past issues and current international
Editorial Board:

In the interest of generating exciting, edgy & multidisciplinary content
for the journal, I wonder if any of the scholars on this mailing list have
articles ready for publication, but with no confirmed destination, who
would like a swift answer on the possiblility of publishing with us?
Articles, essays, relevant 'news' or book or conference reviews -
everything would be positively considered.
I would be very grateful if you could pass this message along to any who
might be interested, including talented postgrads & recent PhDs looking
for early publication.
The final issue for 2006 was a special edition acknowledging the
connection between the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at
Helsinki University and the Finnish Academy funded 'Finnish Centre of
Excellence in Global Governance Research", featuring a multi-disciplinary
and international line-up of contributors. The Spring Issue is loosely
themed around socio-lingistics and comprises contributions by Greg Urban,
Donatella Schmidt, Laura Assmuth of the Helsinki Collegium and an
interview with Professor Michael F. Brown from Williams College, among
others. The Summer Issue attends to 'leisure' pursuits or destinations;
from anthropology of tourism and Cuban gambling, to extreme sports and US
Samoan commemorative practice. And then there are three issues in the
pipeline connected to 1)War and Peace in S.E Asia, 2)Memory and Oral
History and 3)the work of Victor Turner with contributions by Bruce
Kapferer, Edith Turner, Peter Metcalfe & Roy Wagner. Articles or essays on
any subject, including these, would be received with pleasure, and receive
quick response.
Regards to all,
Dr. Marie-Louise Karttunen
