Sarah, do you mean this kind of forum?
http://free-electron.net/psci-com/index.php . You should be careful for
what you wish for ;).
If no one uses this I'll take it down after a while (it only took 5 mins
to set up anyway). This on my personal site though, so if any of you
folks do use the forum, please play nice.
Sarah & Alicia - if you actually want to use this seriously, contact me
directly (details below).
Cheers folks

Subject: Re: [PSCI-COM] Problematising the academic
Just a couple of points in response to the flurry of messages that have
just come round.
First of all, it was never our intention to set up a false divide
between academics and practitioners in this area. As it happens, most of
us involved have been science communication practitioners in the past,
and are currently involved in fruitful collaborations with others. But
our experience is that there are quite a lot of conferences and events
that cater for practice-based work (the BA conference being the big
one), while if you're an academic in this field you're generally pretty
much on your own. The conference is an attempt to forge new links and
bring together research in the area - which hopefully will get fed back
to practice.
So apologies if anyone feels alienated by this. That wasn't the idea!
Secondly, 'the public'...as any of us know, this is a tricky concept to
pin down. Audience - and tailoring communication to it - is key. What's
more, 'the public' contains scientists, science communicators, and
others we don't normally immediately consider. It's these kinds of ideas
we hope people will be considering in May...
Constructive criticism is always helpful! I personally look forward to a
forum - which the conference's resources can't currently provide - where
academic research and practitioner expertise can come together
productively to help both.
Best wishes,
Sarah Davies

Some of us who specialise in communicating science to the public feel
inclined to problematise a tendency of the 'academic' to marginalise
the 'practitioner'.
